Why do American girls call everything "cute"?

Well I live in Canada, and I notice that many american girls call everything "cute". For example, clothes can be cute, hairstyles can be cute, purses and objects can be cute...I don't understand how inanimate objects can be considered cute? If I really like something i will say it's brilliant, nice, beautiful, etc...The only time I ever use the word cute as an adjective is regarding babies or puppies or kittens. I seriously don't understand how cute can be applied to clothes :S Please explain!! I've been to Europe and i've never heard european girls calling things cute...I guess it must be mostly an american thing?
