Why do guys call inanimate objects gay?

I find it really annoying that they just freely use that word. I've also noticed that it's ONLY guys who do it, never girls. Are guys who do this homphobes? Or do they just think it's normal since everyone else is doing it? I doubt it's due to denial, because there are way too many guys who do this.
